Auction Highlights: A Showcase of Masterpieces

Let’s take a look at some highlighted works in this auction. There are various special collections featuring paintings from renowned names such as Hendra Gunawan, Affandi, Harijadi Sumadidjaja, Sudjana Kerton, S. Sudjojono, Widayat, and other talented artists.

Hendra Gunawan

Hendra Gunawan is an Indonesian artist born in Bandung who began painting in the 1930s. He masterfully blended traditional Indonesian themes with a modern artistic approach, creating works that remain celebrated today in galleries and museums worldwide, including the Venice Biennale 2024.

Looking for Lice (Mencari Kutu), 1973

Oil on canvas: 80 x 147.5 cm

Signed and dated, lower right: Hendra’73

Hendra Gunawan’s “Mencari Kutu” (Looking for Lice) depicts an intimate moment of Javanese life, where families bond through the communal act of lice-picking.The painting bursts with color: turquoise blues and greens in the background evoke serenity, while earthy reds and yellows in the foreground add warmth and vitality.

The three women and a baby, seated closely together, exude familial intimacy, with the baby nursing in a gesture of comfort. Traditional batik patterns on their sarongs showcase Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage, while the tranquil backdrop of mountains, glowing skies, and a coastal view contrasts beautifully with the lively interaction in the foreground. Through this poetic depiction, Hendra elevates an everyday act into a celebration of human connection and cultural values.

Affandi

Affandi is one of the most prominent maestros in 20th-century Indonesian art. He was the first Indonesian artist to participate in the prestigious São Paulo Biennale (1952) and Venice Biennale (2024). Together with President Soekarno, Affandi brought international recognition to Indonesia through his portraits of world leaders and nobility.

Affandi

Earl of Glynn, 1959

Oil on canvas: 109 x 87 cm

Signed and dated, upper right: A. 1959

In this auction, we have several Affandi’s pieces, such as Earl of Glynn (1959) and Dancer (1965). In Earl of Glynn, this painting captures the essence of an English nobleman through Affandi’s signature spontaneous style. Seated in a relaxed yet commanding pose, the nobleman gazes to the right, dressed in a striped green, red, and black ensemble. His focused expression and detailed features, such as eyes, nose, mouth, hair, and beard, are brought to life with bold, textured strokes applied directly from the tube, exemplifying Affandi’s instinctive approach.

Harijadi Sumadidjaja

Harijadi Sumadidjaja was a self-taught painter and a key figure in the Young Indonesian Artists (Seniman Indonesia Muda or SIM) organization. As a realist artist, he played a significant role in the Indonesian Revolution, creating works that emphasized the ideals and struggles of the common people.

Mr. Yip Tung Fun, 1963

Oil on canvas: 93 x 140 cm

Signed, titled, and dated, lower right: Harijadi S. Djak. 12

His painting “Mr. Yip Tung Fun” depicts a situation in a construction site. Dominating the foreground is a businessman or project supervisor, thoughtfully posed with a relaxed composure. Dressed in a simple shirt, he exudes authority and experience, with a pen and notebook visible in his pocket, symbolizing his role in overseeing the work. Surrounding him are workers engaged in labor, suggesting a scene of industrial activity and construction.

The color palette is dominated by earthy and muted tones, such as deep greens, browns, and grays, emphasizing the ruggedness and realism of the scene. Bright patches of blue in the sky and subtle whites add contrast and balance, highlighting the industrial structures in the background.

In addition to the featured paintings, the auction includes contemporary creations by modern artists and a selection of sculptures, each thoughtfully curated.

Art collectors and enthusiasts are invited to view these works in person at Global Auction’s gallery on Jl. Tanah Abang IV No. 23-35, Central Jakarta, from November 12 to 28, 2024.
